About Us
Who We Are
Atlanta Free School in Atlanta, Georgia, is a private democratic school where elementary aged children co-direct their academic day with the help of compassionate facilitators. Atlanta Free School is a school founded in liberation and an agency for all young people.
We cater to the children who have difficulty in traditional school settings and have been sent to Georgia's Network for Educational and Therapeutic Support (GNETS), Georgia's version of a public alternative school, on a recommendation from their teachers by way of an IEP. The US Department of Justice has sued Georgia's Network for Educational and Therapeutic Support for its handling of education for children who are disabled and less than 90% of those students will ever graduate from high school.
What We Are About
Our mission is to provide a safe and fulfilling learning environment for these students where they can learn self-direction from the youngest ages in a learning community that values connection and emotional intelligence over compulsory academic competency. We are a school similar in philosophy to Sudbury Valley and Brooklyn Free School, but different in that our demographic is entirely made up of children with disabilities.
